We are huge fans of wings, like HUGE. We don’t reserve them exclusively for game days and parties, instead, we make a meal out of them! These Lemon Pepper Wings are a favorite of my youngest, Bryce.

There is something truly spectacular about the bright citrus flavor in these easy Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings. When you combine that brightness with the subtle heat from the pepper, it’s really magical and makes these baked chicken wings finger’ lickin’ good.

This easy baked chicken wings recipe comes together quickly with the following ingredients:

  • chicken wings – you want wing and/or drumsticks
  • salt
  • pepper
  • olive oil – helps the wings to crisp up
  • baking powder – the secret to extra crispy baked chicken wings
  • lemon pepper seasoning – the primary flavor profile in these baked wings
  • butter – melted and combined with the lemon pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder for a finger lickin’ sauce for the wings

How To Make Baked Wings

  • Preheat the oven and line a large baking sheet with foil. Set a metal cooling rack over the top and spray the rack with non stick cooking spray.
  • Dry chicken pieces thoroughly and place in a large bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the salt, pepper, olive oil, and baking powder and whisk to combine. Pour over the chicken and stir to coat the wings.
  • Lay the wings on the rack leaving ample space between the wings.
  • Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until they turn a light golden color, turning the wings over half-way through.
  • Prepare the lemon pepper butter sauce by mixing the garlic powder, onion powder, butter and lemon pepper seasoning together in a medium bowl.
  • Let the wings cool slightly before tossing them in the lemon pepper mixture.
  • Place the wings back on the cooling rack to drain the excess butter off.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with your favorite dip and lemon wedges or slices.

    How Long To Bake Chicken Wings

    Baking chicken wings depends largely on the oven temperature. I find that 425F gives me the crispy backed chicken wings that we all want and crave.

    At 425F the chicken wings should be baked for 45 to 50 minutes but because every oven is different, start checking the wings around 35 minutes.

    How do I store leftovers? Leftover wings can be refrigerated for up to 3 days in an airtight container.

    Can baked wings be frozen? Yes! Flash freeze the wings on a parchment lined baking sheet for about 1 hour. Transfer to a freezer safe ziploc bag and make sure to squeeze out all excess air. Wings can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, let wings thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Bake at 375F for 15 minutes or until heated through.

    Can this recipe be doubled? Got lots of friends and family coming over for game day? Then you’re going to want to double this recipe. Just make sure to give the wings plenty of space when baking. You want the air to be able to freely flow around the wings so they get nice and crispy.

    What kind of chicken wings are best? You want to use wingettes and drumettes for this recipe. Those pieces (the 1st and 2nd segments) have the most meat.

    Air Fryer Wings: Prepare as directed and then cook in your air fryer for 20 to 25 minutes at 425F until they are crispy. Give them a stir about half way through. Toss the wings with the lemon pepper butter sauce and then serve.

    There is nothing worse than baking chicken wings that don’t turn out crispy. The good news is that is easily avoidable. There are a few different ways to ensure you have crispy baked chicken wings:

    • use baking powder – the baking powder creates a lovely crispy exterior
    • dry the wings thoroughly with a paper towel
    • allow for plenty of space between chicken wings when baking so the wings crisp up nicely
    • wings should be nice and crispy after about 45 minutes, if not, go ahead throw them under the broiler for a couple minutes – just make sure to keep a close eye on them so they don’t burn

    Tips and Tricks for the Best Baked Chicken Wings

  • Give the wings plenty of space on the wire rack so the air can circulate and cook the wings evenly and make them crispy.
  • If your wings did not come as wingettes and drumettes, you will need to remove the wing tip and them cut them in half through the joint.
  • Dry the chicken wings thoroughly with paper towels. This not only helps the wings crisp up nicely in the oven, but also helps the olive oil mixture adhere to the skin of the wing.
  • Cook the wings on a wire rack that has been sprayed with non stick cooking spray so your wings don’t stick and get extra crispy.
